Designers use YUPO synthetic paper to support extreme conditions
Backpacker Magazine, the magazine for hiking and trekking enthusiasts, wanted to provide its readers with a special treat. Instead of just profiling six of the editors’ favorite trails in the Northwest, they wanted to give readers lariat-sized maps so other like-minded hikers could actually go out and experience the trails.
The challenge was to create these mini maps so that they could be easily included in the magazine and act as a giveaway to its readers. The maps also had to be extremely durable to survive the great outdoors, as well as able to provide detailed information in a very a small space. The printing had to be razor sharp and not fade or smudge even under the toughest hiking conditions.
After some research, Backpacker Magazine’s creatives designed a special perforated insert on YUPO synthetic paper. Because it is non-porous, the ink is not absorbed into the paper, making the colors literally “sit up” on the surface of the paper. The result is extremely precise, brilliant color even on a tiny space. The synthetic’s inherent qualities also mean that the maps won’t rip or tear. They will never smudge and are 100% waterproof.
The six maps feature detailed topographical maps with trails marked by waypoints and driving directions to the trailhead. The reverse side illustrates each waypoint with more specific instructions. With locations like the Seattle’s Far Country Lookout and Spokane’s Devils Eye Route, hiking aficionados will love these maps.
